We had the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica recently. We’ve heard so much about this being the ideal destination to reboot and fully recharge, we had to check it out! The claims are true - they really have this whole wellness thing figured out. What are they doing that we are not? Yes, they eat a clean diet, get regular physical activity, and spend as much time as possible in nature. But many of us do this as well. After spending time getting to know the locals, we learned that their secret to living well lies in their motto, “Pura Vida.”
Pura Vida translates to “pure life” or “simple life” and is more than a motto for Costa Ricans. Instead of being just a nice idea or inspirational goal, it is the way that they actually live their lives. There is an appreciation of life’s simple pleasures. They have the ability to slow down and not take things for granted. They don’t get thrown as easily when things don’t go their way. When those little annoyances would show up in their day, we watched them exclaim “Pura Vida!” and brush them off. In the coastal village of Nosara, the locals end each day together on the beach to watch the sun go down. It is an amazing thing to see everyone reconnect at the end of the day appreciating the beautiful sunset. Here at home, do we even notice that the sun is setting half the time? Most days we are dealing with rush hour, picking up kids, or running errands. Our harried and jam-packed lifestyle really works against us.
Since we can’t all up and move to Costa Rica, how do we inject some Pura Vida into our own lives? We have more control over this than we think, since it mostly has to do with our attitude or frame of mind. Here are some ideas:
- Don’t sweat the small stuff. Let those little annoyances roll off your back.
- Focus on the important things. Family, friends, good food, and our beautiful surroundings.
- Appreciate life’s simple pleasures. Really enjoy drinking that cup of coffee or taking in the fresh air outside.
- Stop being in such a hurry all of the time. Give yourself reminders throughout the day to slow down.
As we all continue to evolve in our wellness practices, Pura Vida is really something to think about!
